COMMUNITY OF PRAXIS

The purpose of the Laboratory of Common Interest project is to foster co-production and collective critical action, to assemble communities of praxis, where praxis refers to a co-construction of meaning through thought and action (drawing on Marx and anarchist thought).
Dialogue #8 convened a community of praxis in the hub space of Limerick City Gallery. Many of those who have professed an interest in being part of the project in some way were present to discuss, critique, reframe the ideas for the laboratory project thus far, and to bring different ideas and practices into dialogue with each other, in order to shift perspectives and create a genuine space for emergence.

Until April 2019, FREE*SPACE is working with different groups, individuals and organisations to build a dialogue around themes inspired by the Limerick Soviet; alternative economies/ invisible labour/ common interest.
Free Space Dialogue #7 hosted Dr. Conor McCabe, whose recently published book, Money (2018) addresses the opaque and abstract form of money as a social relation and as a technology of power. It also puts forward alternatives that involve facing up to deep economic class divisions within Irish society. This dialogue took the form of a round table discussion that included artists, activists, trade unionists, Soviet100 committee members, students, academics. This is part of the Alternative Economies research co-produced with Ciaran Nash.

Free Space Dialogue #6 focused on Alternative Economies, co-produced with Ciaran Nash. The question for discussion: could an alternative currency operate during the 12 day centenary of the Limerick soviet, and if so how would it work?

MONEY, SPACE AND CINEMA
March 2017
The movements of money and the relations of power flow through the spaces of the city in unseen ways. Can cinema unveil some of the invisible forces that impinge upon our lives? Money, Space and Cinema is a series of film screenings exploring the way that film visualises the complex effects of global and financial structures on our experience of the world. Each screening was followed by a group discussion. See journal for details.
Organised as a collaboration between Rod Stoneman and Fiona Woods. Films screened: Money Puzzles, (Channan, 2015); Robinson in Ruins (Keiller, 2010); Concerning Violence (Olson, 2014); Fire at Sea (Rosi, 2016). Spaces discussed during dialogues here

FREE SPACE?
Dialogue #1 was hosted by Lucia Pola @Old School with food provided by Pauline Goggin and Fiona Woods. Participants included Lucia Pola (designer, Old School), Pauline Goggin (socially engaged artist), Kate O' Shea (artist, community activist and MA student), Maeve Collins (socially engaged artist and educator), Trudi van der Elsen (artist and curator) and Fiona Woods (artist, educator and PhD researcher).
Over lunch participants were asked to share their views on the question 'what possibilities and challenges could a free space open up, in theory or in practice?'
